Here is everything you need to know to discover IF yeast overgrowth is what is making you sick and how to get rid of the fungus using natural and/or pharmaceutical options.

Most people know about vaginal yeast infections, but did you know that men are susceptible to prostatitis from yeast overgrowths? And that couples give each other the infection in a ping pong manner? If one of you have yeast, the other likely does too. And if you have a toenail infection, it's a sign that you are overrun with yeast.

The good news is that yeast is beatable.

FIX THIS NOW

There are really 5 basic approaches to eradicating Candida and yeasts:

1. Kill 'em
2. Starve 'em
3. Avoid foods of that class (yeasts, molds, cheese, etc.)
4. Squeeze 'em out. Set up competitive friendly microbes (probiotics)
5. Clean up the terrain

This information comes from my favorite "alternative doctor," Keith Scott-Mumby in his book, "Beyond Candida."

"Candida" is really just an umbrella name for overgrowth organisms which may include Candida albicans but is certainly not the only culprit. Regular food yeasts (the saccharomyces) are quite capable of producing all the symptoms. Some of this comes from bread and alcoholic drinks but there are plenty of yeasts on the skin of foods and also molds that settle from the atmosphere.

The worst provocation factor of all is antibiotics. The indiscriminate use of these substances, especially the so-called broad-spectrum kind (such as tetracycline or amoxicillin), leads to loss of normal healthy bacteria that can and should exist on and within our bodies. Once these friendly florae are removed, then Candida can assert itself without competition and it switches to a very aggressive mode of growth.

YEAST WILL OVERTAKE YOUR SYSTEM

The yeast can mutate from a single-celled organism to a thread-like "mycelial" form, which penetrates your gut wall and enters your bloodstream. This makes your gut "leaky," so that partly digested food molecules can enter your bloodstream and set off allergic reactions.

In your gut, Candida ferments sugary foods to produce carbon dioxide, which causes bloating and flatulence. It also produces alcohol and other complex chemicals that irritate the lining of your gut.

This has the effect of making your gut go into painful spasms and is less able to assimilate food, leading to constipation or diarrhea. These effects make Candida a major cause (although not the only one) of irritable bowel syndrome. As it spreads through your body, Candida also produces increasing quantities of toxic by-products, which can cause a host of physical and mental symptoms. There is a table of possible symptoms on page 26, that will help you decide if it might be your problem.

Because the symptoms of Candidiasis are so varied and vague, for years conventional medicine has largely put patient's symptoms down to hysteria or malingering. Even today, whilst Candida is acknowledged as the cause of thrush, many doctors continue to ignore the fact that candidiasis is a "real" medical condition.

Yeast infection can be contagious and passed during sexual activity. This is especially true in the case of a yeast infection in the vaginal or penis area. Of course, using protection and being cautious is a very important step in preventing the spread of yeast infection.

One of the obvious results of Candida's profusion may
be thrush in the mouth or the vagina. The latter affects only women, of course, but men can get thrush on (and in) their penis. Thrush is easily seen as a white slimy paste spread over the membranes (Candida is from a Latin word, which means "pure white").

It is important when treating a woman for vaginal thrush to also treat her male partner. Otherwise, we get into what we call "ping pong" infections: he gives it to her and she gives it to him, back and forth.

If many of the symptoms and factors listed below apply to you, it is likely that you're suffering from candidiasis:

• Bloating and discomfort, especially after meals.
• Griping pains in your lower abdomen.
• Constipation or diarrhea.
• Fatigue or muscle weakness.
• Muscle or joint pains, or arthritis.
• "Brain fog," feelings of unreality or memory loss.
• Thrush, athlete's foot, ringworm or fungal infection of your nails.
• Urinary tract infection or vaginal discharge.
• Depression or tearfulness.
• "Low" immune system and frequent infections.
• Sensitivities to foods, tobacco smoke, chemical odors or perfume.
• Antibiotics are taken for more than one month or more than four times within 12 months.
• Prednisolone or other steroid drugs are taken for more than two weeks.
• Anti-ulcer drugs (e.g. Zantac, Tagamet) taken for more than two months.
• Birth control pill or hormone replacement therapy for more than two years.
• Cravings for sugar, bread or alcohol.
• Symptoms are worse on damp, muggy days or in damp, moldy places.

Warning: all lists such as this contain symptoms that could have many other causes. It's the overall picture that counts.

The main causes of Candida/ yeast syndrome are:

1. Broad-spectrum antibiotics
2. Lowered immunity
3. Sugary, starchy diets (negative nutrition)
4. Steroid drugs (including the oral contraceptive group)
5. Other immune-compromising drugs (chemotherapy group)
6. Prolonged illness (becoming rundown and debilitated)
7. Stress (lowers the immune system)

The Prostatitis Foundation says you may consider yourself possibly suffering from candidiasis if you have:

• Taken multiple courses of antibiotics for your prostatitis without relief;

• Had prostatitis for longer than 6 months, and your urologist looks a little irritated or desperate when he sees you;

• A myriad of other symptoms along with prostatitis.

Read the list below, and if a significant number of symptoms sound familiar you may wish to embark on a trial one-month restricted (healthy) diet. If the diet results in an improvement, even if slight, in your condition, a doctor may prescribe an antifungal drug like Nystatin, Diflucan, Lamisil or Sporanox to be taken in conjunction with the diet.

Warning: These drugs are potentially toxic and you will need the book Beyond Candida to learn what's safe as well as natural alternatives you may prefer to try before going straight to pharmaceuticals.

Here follows a shortened list of the associated symptoms which typically accompany a CA-induced prostatitis.

If you have recently experienced many of these symptoms your likelihood of being helped by an anti-CA approach is increased:

• Pain on or difficulty with urination
• Blood or albumen in the urine
• Joint pain, often moving from joint to joint
• Aching muscles
• Jock itch
• Hives, dermatitis, eczema, seborrhoea, dandruff
• Unexplained rashes

• Dry, irritated, reddened eyes
• Blurred vision (episodic)
• "Glue" ear - sticky canal, itchy
• Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
• Mental confusion, fogginess
• Pounding headaches
• Depression and mood swings
• Unusual irritability
• Panic attacks
• Forgetful
• Sleepy during the day or early evening
• Sugar craving
• Bingeing on sweet foods
• Dark rings under eyes
• Cold hands and feet
• Burning or tingling in hands and feet
• Abnormal sweating
• Irritable bowel

• Mouth ulcers
• Acid regurgitation
• Sinusitis, postnasal drainage, nosebleeds

BEYOND CANDIDA IS ALL YOU NEED

I love Dr. Scott-Mumby's advice. He gives you everything you need to feel better fast. I am always fighting back against my yeast issues. I use a combination of natural and pharmaceutical remedies to control it. I got this issue from eating too much bread, pizza, pasta, bagels, and cereal until I developed a gluten sensitivity and had to give it all up.

DR. KEITH SCOTT-MUMBY

If you're getting recurring prostatitis or vaginal infections, toenail infections or experiencing a number of the above maladies, please consider going on a yeast-starving diet and at least trying the natural remedies in this book.
