My wife is pushing me away (Mailbag)

I recently received an email from a father of four who's been married for 13 years.

Jack and his wife stopped having sex after their fourth child was born. He feared their sexual "dry spell" would never end. To make matters worse, she wouldn't even kiss him anymore. She said it grossed her out.

As is so often the case when a couple's intimate life dries up, there were several issues at play.

1) They have different relationship values. (This can turn into a big PLUS in a relationship, once you know how to talk about it.)

2) Painful intercourse. (An obvious deal-breaker for any woman UNTIL her partner learns a simple technique used by sexual healers.)

3) Erectile dysfunction, exacerbated by their different attachment styles (sometimes called the "approach-avoidance dance").

As is true in so many relationships, the problems between these two were made worse by lack of communication.

For Jack and his wife, communication was key in resolving each of their issues.

Let's look at issue #1: the relationship values question.

If you are single, please scroll down to the bottom of this email and click SINGLE.

MEND THE WOUNDS

Jack's the kind of guy who hates fighting with his wife and tends to avoid talking about the hard stuff. But once I helped him see the connection between his frustration and the difference in their relationship values, he was able to work up the nerve to speak with his wife.

One of Jack's top four relationship values is having a passionate connection with his partner. For him, marriage meant making love throughout their lives - yes, even into old age. He needed to make it clear that he didn't sign up for a sexless marriage.

"I feel alone," he told his wife, allowing himself to be vulnerable.

Initially, she got defensive, "So... if we don't have sex anymore, you will divorce me?"

He assured her that was not what he meant at all, that he'd married her for better or for worse. But he didn't leave it there.

He wanted her to understand that he considered sex part of their deal as man and wife, just like having a family. "How would you have felt if I had refused to have kids?"

His wife replied, "That's not the same."

He said, "Isn't it? You came into this marriage under the agreement that we would have children. If I broke that promise, how would you feel?"

That really made her think.

Like so many couples, these two had never clarified their individual "why" for being in a relationship. They'd never identified the bottom-line, must-have relationship values that made them want to couple-up in the first place.

What's truly amazing to me about relationship values is how little couples talk about them!

There's this assumption people make that "being a couple" is value enough. It's not! Divorce rates wouldn't be so high if just "being a couple" was enough to make us happy.

What makes for happy coupling-up is when each of individual gets satisfaction on their essential, non-negotiable values.

To do that requires a two-step process:

Each of you identifies your personal values, independent of the other. This step includes stating the exact actions that would satisfy that value. For example, if you value affection, you double down and state specifically what that looks like.

"I want to hold hands in public. I want you to touch me whenever we're close. I want you to come up behind me when I'm in the kitchen and hold me while I chop vegetables." Stuff like that.

When two people have this crucial intel on each other, everything changes.

The second step is agreeing to satisfy your lover's values as the foundation of your relationship. In other words, now that you know what your lover values most about being in a relationship, you decide, "Yes, I can give you that."

It was the turning point for my husband and I when our marriage was in serious trouble.

That's why I wrote Relationship Magic. This little workbook has helped thousands of couples align on their relationship values and turn their love life around.

Now let's look at the second issue for these two: the painful intercourse problem.

Again, part of the problem for Jack and his wife was lack of communication. They both found it difficult to discuss the hard stuff and kept putting off having that important talk. And, in the meantime, they made matters worse by making assumptions about what the other was thinking and feeling.

Those assumptions got blown apart the day Jack's wife said, "You do all this research about relationships and sex on the Internet. Why don't you look up how to help me with the pain in my vagina?"

Jack looked her dead in the eye and said, "What makes you think I haven't?"

The look of surprise on her face told Jack that he'd disarmed her. That blew things open between them. They started to talk about this difficult subject.

He became very tender and re-assured her saying, "I'm not that big of a jerk that I would hurt you for my own selfish needs."

Jack knew his wife had been to the gynecologist but didn't get any help.

I had advised him to do whatever it took to get her vulva fixed. He needed to start by helping her find a professional who could help her. I explained to him that it might not be a gynecologist, maybe a nurse practitioner. A doula. A midwife.

Once Jack's wife saw that he was truly on board with helping her heal, she became open to him playing an active role. That meant giving her healing genital massages to bring blood into her vulva.

I explained it to him this way:

You may have to give her 200 yoni massages before she wants you inside her again. But it will be worth it because she'll want you for real instead of because she HAS to give you sex out of "duty."

I said: I swear to you on a stack of Kama Sutras, this WILL work. And give her breast massages while the two of you are watching TV. In time she'll be like, "OMG, I want my amazing husband to make love to me! Give it to me, baby!"

Okay. Let's look at issue #3: Jack's erectile dysfunction.

The cause of his ED was no mystery in Jack's case. It was a direct result of not feeling wanted or desired by his wife, who he was still madly in love with after 13 years of marriage.

He'd tried hypnosis and meditation to help with the anxiety about his erection problem. That helped him regain some of his self-confidence, but he still worried that he might have difficulty getting a full hard-on.

What it really came down to was clearing the air. Jack needed to relax and not feel like he was walking on eggshells any time he wanted sex.

His attachment style (what psychotherapists call "insecure attachment") makes it difficult for Jack to be present, much less feel manly, when he is afraid of getting rejected by his wife.

What he described to me was an all-too common approach-avoidance dance, flavored with rejection and blame.

At the slightest invitation from him, she would shut him down with: "All you focus on is sex."

From Jack's point of view, that was complete bunk.

In his words (reading): "There are plenty of times I'm happy to cuddle with her and expect nothing in return. Yes, I think sex is important. It is supposed to bring us closer together! Last night I reached for her and she threw that in my face again: "all you want is sex." I told her: Maybe I focus on sex because you spend the majority of your time pushing me away and trying not to be close to me! It's hurtful."

Of course it hurts. And it's totally understandable that Jack would feel rejected.

It's a common problem and can be very upsetting for a man. But it can be solved.

The first thing I always tell men is: Do not take it personally.

Her hormones are making her brain reject you. It's NOT her. It's those damn hormones.

It's important for a man to understand that a woman's libido is directly linked to her sex hormones. When they're low, she will often push him away because she fears that if she touches him at all, he'll want sex.

I have taught thousands of men the best workaround in this situation. The key is to warm her up slowly by making "small offers."

Note that I said small.

When a guy like Jack makes a big offer like, "Hey, honey. Let's have sex tonight," he sets himself up for rejection. It is highly likely he will get an immediate "no."

And that undermines his turn-on because he just can't take another rejection.

But if he waits for her to initiate, the sexual "dry spell" can become a lifestyle - and that's just plain unacceptable.

Here's the secret that makes the "small offers" workaround so effective: rather than shrink back and wait for his wife to come around... which, let's face it, may never happen... he steps into his masculine leadership and makes his wife an enticing offer she can comfortably accept.

Big offers create distance and rejection. Small offers bring closeness.

A small offer makes it easy for her to say yes.

For example: "Sweetheart, can I get you a glass of wine?"

Or, "Do you want to sit on the couch and tell me about your day?"

A "yes" is a sign to step it up a bit.

"Would you like a foot massage?"

Or, "I can rub your neck for you. Would you like that?"

Start small and you may very well get a "yes" to both.

From there, make another offer: "Would you like to get in the hot tub with me?"

If you make an offer that's too much, back off. And whatever you do, don't take a "no" personally. That will send her back into her own orbit.

Simply lower the offer and give her a variety of options until she says "yes" again.

The goal is to make the offers so small and irresistible that she gives a string of yeses and becomes more and more open sexually.

I talk about this in depth in my book, Sexual Soulmates: the Six Essentials for Connected Sex.

In fact, the six essentials are a proven remedy for low libido.

Lover’s Practice: “Sharing Frames” (Passion Playdates #1)

Jmonty1945@gmail.com, make some time for this...

People ask me all the time to tell them the, "ONE THING" that can make their sex life better.

It's such an unfair question because everyone is in a different place, and sexuality matures over time to become better if you put your attention on it like you do.

But if pressed, I'd say, Passion Playdates could be the #1 way to have better sex for almost everyone.

Passion Playdates (we often call them Sandbox Dates or Erotic Playdates) are when you and your partner set aside a specific time for passion play and sensual "private" activities where you both come in as beginners, assuming you know nothing and proceeding to learn new things and experiences together.

These are little exercises and activities you can do as a couple to expand and deepen your satisfaction and pleasure together as a couple.

Think of it as a fun "couples sexercise" that grows and enriches your intimacy - physical and emotional.

Singles can even learn these Passion Playdates to be ready when they find someone they like and want to invite into their lives, or for when they find their future partner.

Now, for our Passion Playdate #1, let's do "Sharing Frames."

When I say frame, I mean it like a frame or border around a picture - a snapshot in time, a short time sequence, or a single moment.

For this Playdate, you and your partner will be sharing a special moment of a recent sexual experience you had together.

What's fun is this is the kind of playdate you can do while driving in the car... or at dinner together. It doesn't have to be done IN the bedroom and it's sexy talk that can increase your desire for one another.

What you're going to do is share, in as much physical and sensation-based detail as possible a moment of lovemaking where you experienced something very sublime or sensual or erotic or anything that was extra special for you.

"For example, the other day I came back from a swim and my whole body felt dry. My husband laid me down on the bed and he massaged organic coconut oil into my whole body. He started with my arms and legs, then he gave me a breast and belly massage, then he did my back and my rear end. Then he finished with a foot massage. And then I took a 2 and a half hour afternoon nap. His hands, shimmering with oil, rubbing my entire body just felt so nurturing and sensual. I went from dry to lubricated. It felt so luxurious. And I loved that he did it just to make me feel wonderful, without expecting anything in return."

There, I just shared a frame with you.

People truly enjoy re-living specific date experiences, and they also find they can enjoy new details they missed the first time around. You may have a different look at it than your partner, and they may be surprised at your point of view.

There are even times that when even YOU share your own frame of one of your favorite experiences together, you'll remember new details from your subconscious mind. FUN!

These frames can be about events happening both inside and outside the sensual privacy of your bedroom. Topics can range from tame to erotic. You decide. Have lots of fun with this!

For example, you may say to your partner, "There was a time when I kissed your neck back when we were still dating, and it may be because you're very ticklish, but you twisted your body, curled your head down, and your arms came up to touch and hold my face. And that felt very sensual and warm to me at the time."

You may sometimes even share frames that are non-passion related, such as your partner waking up early to cook your favorite meal on your birthday, or when they volunteered to take on the house work while you get your work done.

These are all going to be very personal frames for both of you, and I know you'll have a lot of fun sharing them with each other with the mindset of complete beginners.

This will start to grow your appreciation, respect, and love for each other, and make your relationship bloom.

This week's articles were all written to give you even more experiences and frames to have with your partner.
